A new model for military reserve recruitment in Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is under discussion on Sunday, which allows reservists to be called up only during training and national emergency.
A committee, headed by Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, discussed a model under which the government will reserve the right to define an emergency situation.
The committee's proposal said reservists would be relieved of their duties before the age of 40, as well as serving only 42 days every three years but no less than seven days a year, fully compensated for each day of service.
The proposal recommends those who carry out reserve duty for longer than the 42 days in three years or serve over the age of 40 would get additional remuneration.
The new model suggested the IDF decide which reserve soldiers are required for active service, on the basis of a well-defined and publicized policy.
It said the IDF will make up for the lack of reservists through other methods, likely including hiring recently released soldiers for short-term service.
The new model, set out by a team headed by Chief Reserve Officer Ariel Heiman, is expected to be implemented in two years.
