Mubarak, Saudi crown prince mull Mideast situation over phone 29/3/2004

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on Sunday phoned Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz on the latest Middle East situation in the wake of Tunisia's decision to delay the Arab League summit.

"The two sides discussed the latest developments in the region and bilateral relations," Egypt's official MENA news agency said.

"The phone contact came hours after Tunisia announced the postponement of the summit, originally scheduled for Monday," it added, without elaborating.

Tunisia decided to indefinitely delay the summit due to what it termed divergence over reform proposals.

The Mubarak-Abdul Aziz phone talks also coincided with an offer made by Egypt to host the summit.

"Egypt welcomes the convening of the summit in the country of the headquarters of the Arab League at the earliest possible time that can be agreed on," Mubarak's office said in a statement on Tuesday.

Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal, who has been in Tunisia to attend Arab foreign ministers' meeting on March 26-27, is due in Cairo for talks with Mubarak over the postponement, according to MENA.

"Faisal will meet with his Egyptian counterpart Ahmed Maher on an Egyptian offer to hold the summit at the Arab League headquarters in Cairo," it said.

Egypt and Saudi Arabia, two heavyweights in the Arab world, are keeping constant contact on pressing regional issues.
