Palestinian minister warns of deteriorating condition in Israeli jails 14/4/2004

Palestinian Minister of Prisoners Affairs Hisham Abdel Razeq warned on Tuesday of the deterioration of Palestinian prisoners' living condition in Israeli jails, saying that it would lead to a real catastrophe.

"The Israeli jails' administration has launched an attack against the Palestinian prisoners that threatens their lives," Razeq told reporters.

"The jails' administration uses live ammunitions and rubber bullets against the prisoners," he added.

Razeq called on the International Red Cross society and other humanitarian organizations to intervene and put an end to the Israeli practices.

"The situation inside the Israeli jails is very tense and we are working on halting the Israeli practices carried out against Palestinian prisoners," he said.

Meanwhile, Abdel-Razeq said that many public and official activities are being organized in order to mark the Palestinian Prisoners' Day on April 17.

"Many marches and similar activities would be organized in the Palestinian territories. A big march would be organized in Gaza City on April 17 while a big festival on the same occasion would be held April 21," he said.

Adnan Al-Hajar, a representative of the prisoners' committee in the Palestinian higher follow-up committee, said that the committee had prepared a full schedule on the occasion of the Prisoners' Day, adding that many foreign diplomatic missions were invited to mark the occasion.
