French President Jacques Chirac said in Algiers Thursday that any unilateral change on Israeli- Palestinian borders will be troubling precedent and dangerous.
"If circumstances or men start playing with international stability and the rules of international law, it is a troubling precedent, and it's dangerous," Chirac said.
"For the borders, I consider that international law must be respected. I have reservations about any unilateral or bilateral undermining of international law," he noted.
Chirac made these remarks at a news conference during a brief visit to congratulate his Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika's reelection.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon planned to reshape its borders by dismantling all Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip and four from the West Bank.
US President George W. Bush said Wednesday that the plan to reshape the Israeli borders delimited by the Armistice agreement of 1949 was unpractical.
"What is essential to me to reach the peace is the negotiation. I don't believe that peace can be imposed, especially when it concerns two adversaries who have been seriously fighting for such a long time," he said.
