China to Investigate into DuPont Non-stick Cookware 15/7/2004

Amid allegations that American chemical maker DuPont failed to report risks from a chemical used to make Teflon coatings, China's product quality control department is taking action. It says it has already worked out testing measures for the checking of the chemical content of the products. And Dupont's China branch has promised to cooperate with government investigations. CRI reporter Zhou Yun takes a closer look.

China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has announced that it has already found a method to check whether Teflon coatings contain a harmful chemical component.

The component is known as C-8.

In addition, it will also launch an investigation by forming a team of chemical and health experts to research health risks from the material.

Yang Yulin from Shanghai's Center of Disease Control is a bio-chemist who specializes in fluorin materials.

"Based on my research, PFOA does pose threat to human health as it has demonstrated on animals. But we need to see whether any PFOA still remains on end products with Teflon."

The product quality control department also says it will cooperate with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to carry out an information exchange on the risk analysis of C-8.

Most Chinese cookware manufacturers use Teflon coatings made by Dupont. And it seems the companies welcome the investigation. Wang Fenghe is the vice-manager of one Hangzhou-based cookware company, which uses Teflon in its products.

"Of course, I think the launch of a thorough investigation is good news. We hope there are no harmful chemical components in Teflon cookware. It is what both we manufacturers and consumers are expecting."

Its not known when results of the investigation will be announced.
