Shanghai ranks second in foreign trade 12/2/2003

Shanghai reported a total export-import volume of US$72.641 billion last year, accounting for 11.7 percent of the total foreign trade volume nationwide and ranking second in China, according to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation.

Guangdong Province ranked first in China with a total export-import volume of US$221.105 billion last year, 35.6 percent of the total foreign trade volume nationwide.

Following the top two, in order, were Jiangsu Province, Beijing, Zhejiang Province, Shandong Province, Fujian Province, Tianjin, Liaoning Province and Hebei Province.

The total export-import volume of China last year exceeded US$600 billion for the first time, reaching US$620.79 billion, an increase of 21.8 percent from a year before.

Total export volume nationwide topped US$300 billion for the first time last year, amounting to US$325.57 billion, increasing by 22.3 percent from a year before.

The total import volume reached US$295.22 billion, up 21.2 percent from the previous year, with the trade surplus for the whole year reaching US$30.35 billion.
