BEIJING, Sept. 12 (Xinhua) -- China supports the UN Security Council in taking necessary measures regarding the DPRK's nuclear test, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said Tuesday morning.

The UN Security Council on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution to impose fresh sanctions on the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) over its nuclear test on Sept. 3 for violation of previous Security Council resolutions.

Geng said the resolution reflected the unanimous stance of Security Council members in safeguarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the region, advancing denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and upholding international non-proliferation.

He said the resolution called for a peaceful settlement through diplomatic and political means, supported the resumption of six-party talks and stressed measures to de-escalate tension on the peninsula.

"The Chinese side hopes that this resolution will be implemented comprehensively and completely," the spokesperson said.

As a neighbor of the Korean Peninsula, China has been closely following the development of the situation there, Geng said.

He said that China's unswerving stance is for denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula, maintaining peace and stability there and resolving problems through dialogue and consultation.

Related parties should bear their responsibilities, take practical measures to ease tension and resume dialogue and negotiation in order to solve the Korean Peninsula issue, Geng said.

He called on the DPRK to abide by the resolutions of the UN Security Council and stop the development of nuclear missiles, and urged the United States and the Republic of Korea (ROK) to avoid any actions that may further complicate the situation.

The "dual-track approach" and the "suspension for suspension" initiative proposed by China, Geng said, are practical methods to solve the Korean Peninsula issue.

"We called on the relevant parties to work with China to push for dialogue and negotiation and make joint efforts to realize peace and stability on the peninsula," he said.

Geng said China firmly opposes the deployment of the U.S. anti-missile Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system in ROK, which will severely harm the strategic security of China and other countries in the region, and damage the trust and cooperation among related parties on the Korean Peninsula issue.

According to reports, a number of Security Council members addressed the importance of a peaceful and political solution to the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue after the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2375.

State leaders including ROK President Moon Jae-in, Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel reaffirmed recently that they uphold peaceful ways of resolving the Korean Peninsula impasse.

Later on Tuesday, Geng said at a daily press briefing that the current situation on the peninsula is highly complicated, sensitive and severe, and relevant parties should stay calm.

Reiterating that the "dual-track approach" and the "suspension for suspension" initiative are practical methods to solve the issue, Geng called on all relevant parties to actively support China's efforts to push for dialogue and negotiation, and play constructive roles for a peaceful solution of the peninsula issue.
