Firefighter who died in Liaoning named martyr
From:ChinaDaily  |  2022-01-04 09:31

Cui Fushuai, a firefighter who died on Friday during a rescue operation in Dalian, Liaoning province, has been designated as a martyr, the Ministry of Emergency Management said on Monday.

At 11:11 am on Friday, a fire broke out in an underground cold storage unit at the New Changxing Market in the Shahekou district of Dalian. The special brigade of the third station of the Dalian fire and rescue department rushed to the scene.

Cui, 24, volunteered to take charge of the rescue effort.

At 12:16 pm, after bringing six people to safety together with his colleagues, Cui returned to the scene to conduct a second rescue but lost contact with his team during the evacuation process. The fire was extinguished at around 1 pm.

He was found and sent to the hospital at 1:28 pm but died despite emergency rescue efforts.

Born in January 1997 in Dalian, Cui became a firefighter in December 2019. He had been involved in more than 300 firefighting operations and rescued more than 10 people.

The ministry offered condolences to Cui's family and said it would see to it that the family is properly compensated.

Sources from the Shahekou information office revealed on Sunday that nine people, including Cui, were killed in the fire.

Five people sustained minor injuries. After treatment, four were kept in hospital for observation and one had been discharged as of Sunday morning.

An initial investigation showed flammable insulation had been illegally used during the construction of the storage unit, and illegal welding operations ignited the insulation layer on Friday, which produced poisonous gases and led to the asphyxiation of the victims, Dalian Television reported on Monday.
