Ritual dances, martial arts performances and plays were staged at the Confucius temples in Jiading District in Shanghai and Taipei in Taiwan over the weekend to launch this year’s Shanghai Confucian Culture Festival.

The city festival has been held every September since 2008 to commemorate the ancient scholar and pass on traditional Chinese culture, but it was the first time it was joined by the Confucius temple in Taipei via live video.

Gao Xiang, director of the Jiading government, said the two Confucius temples bearing the traditional Chinese culture connected the two cities. She hoped the festival will be a bridge for cross-Strait cultural exchanges and joint efforts for the greater rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.

Lee Cheng-hung, president of the Association of Taiwan Investment Enterprises on the Mainland, said the online cooperation in the launching of the Confucian Culture Festival was an extension of the fruit of the Shanghai-Taipei Forum. This has been held in rotation between the two cities over the past 11 years and promoted cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation in areas including culture, economy and trade. He said the event provided a new way to promote cross-Strait exchanges post the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the organizers, the festival will run till the end of the month with 12 activities held in Jiading. On September 28, visitors to the Jiading temple will be able to watch a Confucius memorial ceremony held in the Confucius Temple of Taipei via live video.
