China’s civil aviation regulator ordered the suspension of China Eastern Airlines’ flight from Manila to Shanghai on Monday, after the carrier had already voluntarily halted the route.

Flight MU212 will be suspended for a week starting from September 28 after eight travelers on a single flight from the Philippines tested positive for COVID-19 on September 9, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) said.

The infected passengers were quarantined upon arrival at the Pudong airport.

The operation of the flight was earlier halted after the Shanghai-based carrier announced its voluntary suspension on September 18.

The airline said the flight will be halted until the airline can make sure to contain risks related to virus transmission.

“China Eastern will closely monitor the situation and cautiously evaluate the risks to its flights that might carry COVID-19 cases,” the airline said.

The flight with China Eastern has been suspended twice by the CAAC since August.

The flight was suspended on August 17 after six passengers tested positive upon arrival at the Pudong airport on an August 5 flight. The suspension was extended after nine tested positive on another flight on August 12.

According to CAAC policies, if all inbound passengers on an airline test negative for the novel coronavirus for three weeks in a row, the operating airline will be allowed to increase its number of flights to two per week.

If the number of passengers testing positive reaches five, the airline's flights will be suspended for a week. The suspension will last for four weeks if the number of passengers testing positive reaches 10.

Over a dozen flights have been suspended since the mechanism was first introduced in June.

The city reported two new imported novel coronavirus cases on Sunday, while three patients were discharged from hospital upon recovery, said the Shanghai Health Commission on Monday morning.

So far, among all the 632 imported cases, 584 have been discharged upon recovery and 48 are still hospitalized. One imported suspected case is undergoing test. No new locally transmitted or suspected cases were reported on Sunday, according to the commission.
