Crowds flock to Xujiahui for start of Double Five shopping frenzy
From:Shanghai Daily  |  2021-05-04 08:29

The Xujiahui commercial hub is attracting crowds of shoppers and visitors during the ongoing May Day holiday amid the city’s annual Double Five shopping frenzy.

Total sales of the seven major department stores and shopping malls in Xujiahui, named after the Ming Dynasty scientist-scholar Xu Guangqi (1562-1633), reached 37.58 million yuan (US$5.8 million) on Saturday, the first day of the five-day holiday.

That’s a 14.55 percent increase year on year, and more than 40 percent up from 2019, the Xuhui District government said.

The renowned commercial hub had more than 20 percent more customers on Saturday than on May Day last year.

The district launched its Double Five Shopping Festival on Sunday evening at the Xujiahui hub, featuring blooming flowers, a newly unveiled Internet theme park and multiple sub-festivals for coffee, glass and youth.

The commercial hub and the newly opened skywalk have been decorated with flowers covering 1,000 square meters. The site is one of the sub-venues of the 2021 Shanghai International Flower Show.

More than 80 species of flowers, such as peonies, butterfly orchids and cherry flowers, are in full bloom inside and outside the shopping complexes.

A theme park of the popular livestreaming platform Bilibili was launched at the opening ceremony of the shopping festival. Many famous animation figures will be introduced in the park to attract young people.

Nine young livestreaming hosts were appointed “experiencing officers” at the ceremony to sample the popular stores and eateries in Xujiahui for their online audiences.

The Xujiahui hub will hand out about 80,000 shopping coupons and WeChat discounts which can be used at new stores, fashion outlets, popular restaurants and cosmetics stores in the malls.

Culture and entertainment coupons have also been issued to boost business at bookstores, cafes, cinemas, cultural centers and gyms.

This year’s festival in Xujiahui mainly targets young customers. The second Shanghai Internet Youth Life Festival was also launched on Sunday, with glass culture festival, coffee life festival and night markets titled “Hi Youth, Ye Life.”

The renovation of the Xujiahui commercial zone began in 2017 and in the wake of eight years of declining sales due to online competition.

The commercial zone was established in 1992, one of eight in Shanghai.

As one of the most eye-catching projects, the 400-meter initial phase of the Xujiahui Skywalk connects the renovated Xiya Hotel, now the T20 building, with Huilian Mall and once popular digital markets Metro City and Pacific Digital City.

The next phase will link the Orient Shopping Center, Grand Gateway 66, Pacific Department Store and Xujiahui Center, which will be the tallest building in Puxi when completed in 2023.

The former three-star Xiya Hotel, built in 1995, has been redeveloped into the upmarket T20 complex. A T-Station public space was unveiled on Sunday on the second floor to host the opening ceremony of the shopping festival.
