Starting this Saturday, Jan. 20, QR code payment will be available across the whole subway network in Shanghai.

Through “Metro Metropolis,” an app developed by Shanghai Metro, commuters will be able to pay for their tickets via Alipay or Unionpay by scanning the QR code generated on the app. The average response time is only 0.5 second, before the gate is automatically open for passengers.

The service is available at designated entrance and exit gates across the city’s metro stations.

Most notably, unlike traditional online payment, this technology can still function when there is no wireless signal on users’ mobile phones or no money on their accounts as delayed payment is acceptable.

During the trial run of QR code payment for Shanghai’s metro stations from Jan. 20 to Feb. 28, a series of promotional activities will be rolled out on the app. Commuters will enjoy discounts and incentives if they choose to pay metro fares via Alipay or Unionpay.

The “Metro Metropolis” app can be downloaded from both the Apple and Android app stores.
