A show of martial art and modern dance
By:Wu Qiong  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2018-01-18 16:17

There is no clear boundary between martial art and dance. A show named “Martial Art in Dance” is going to be staged at the Shanghai International Dance Center on Jan. 19 -20.

A work of famed Chinese dancer and artist Zhao Liang,“Martial Art in Dance” represents an encounter between dance and martial art. In the show, martial art champions and dancers perform together on the same stage. By integrating the Chinese art into modern dance, Zhao endeavors to create a new dance language and introduce Chinese philosophy to the world.

To make the performance more professional, Zhao recruits Wu Bin, vice president of the Chinese Wushu Association, as the consultant. Over the past years, being described as the “Golden Trainer,” Wu has apprenticed kung fu stars including Jacky Wu (also known as Wu Jing) and Jet Li.

The Chinese name of “Martial Art of Dance” (“wǔ shù” in Mandarin) is originated from “dance” (“wǔ” in Mandarin) and “martial art” (“shù” in Mandarin), to present a boundary-crossing theater work that holistically demonstrates to all audience. As a commissioned project of the 2017 China Shanghai International Arts Festival, the show made its debut in Shanghai last October.
