Chinese shares slump 2.63 pct in morning session
23/10/2008 16:01

Chinese shares plummeted 2.63 percent this morning, dragged down by an overnight Wall Street fall and a dampened investor confidence.
The Shanghai Composite Index dived 2.63 percent, or 49.91 points, to close at 1,945.91. The Shenzhen index fell 0.92 percent, or 57.70 points, to close at 6,220.34 points.
Wall Street stocks suffered sell-off on increasing concerns about global economic recession and weak corporate earning outlook. All major indexes plunged more than 4 percent while the Dow Jones average declined 514.45, or 5.69 percent, to 8,519.21.
Aggregate turnover was 24.6 billion yuan (US$3.62 billion), compared with the previous whole day's 46 billion yuan. Losses outnumbered gains by 578-228 in Shanghai and 498-165 in Shenzhen.
