The Republic of Madagascar and the Central African Republic have signed participation contracts with World Expo 2010 Shanghai organizers. Forty-nine of Africa's 54 countries have confirmed participation.

The latest two to sign up will exhibit in the joint Africa Pavilion during the six-month event opening on May 1, 2010. China is providing the space free of charge to countries that could not otherwise take part.

Madagascar, the world's fourth-largest island, will explore the theme "Live Naturally" to showcase the interaction between cities and countryside. The 2010 Expo theme is "Better City, Better Life."

Madagascar, a natural paradise, will also focus on biodiversity, said Denis Roland Raoeliarijaona, commissioner-general of Madagascar for Shanghai Expo, at a press conference.

The Central African Republic, which confirmed its participation as early as April 2006, will showcase the prosperity of urban economy.

The Chinese government has pledged US$100 million to assist developing countries with exhibitions, booths, activities and accommodation at Shanghai Expo.

The Africa Pavilion is the biggest organizers will build for participants. Construction will begin late this month.

Of Expo's 206 confirmed participants, 45 have signed contracts.
