Former Thai PM supports Thaksin's return home
12/11/2006 11:13

Thailand's former prime minister Gen. Chavalit Yongchaiyudh Saturday said that it is better for ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra to return home and for the military junta to monitor his movements.
Chavalit, whose political party, the New Aspiration Party, merged with Thaksin's Thai Rak Thai Party, made his comment following reports that Thaksin may return to Thailand before the year-end. He was quoted by the Thai News Agency as saying that there would not be any problem if Thaksin wants to return to Thailand because he is a Thai citizen.
When asked if the Council for National Security (CNS) and the interim government which it installed after the bloodless coup on Sept. 19 were still concerned about national security if Thaksin returns home now, Chavalit said that Thaksin could stay at his own home and officials could watch him everyday.
Chavalit said he believed that Thaksin's return would be better for all concerned. The Thai people should settle their differences through talks instead of letting Thaksin stay far away from home.
