People from all walks of life across China have plunged themselves to
donate funds on their own accord for tsunami-ravaged countries in south and
southeast Asia over the past few days.
The Liaoning Provincial Red Cross Society has collected 1.07 million yuan
(128,915 US dollars) of charity funds during the three-day New Year holiday
season as an expression of their sympathy and regards for tsunamic victims.
The Red Cross Society of southwestern Yunnan Province has set up donation
centers at the railway stations and in parks, urging people to offer a helping
hand to tsunamic victims. Meanwhile, local residents have pooled 263,500 yuan
(31,746 US dollars) of donations.
The Red Cross Society in east China's Jiangxi Province has opened a special
bank account to receive donations for victims in earthquake and tsunami-hit
countries. The province has also opened a relief hotline and set up donation
centers at universities, government institutions, neighborhood communities and
public sites.
Shanghai, the country's largest metropolis in east China, has planned to hold
a grand charity performance on Wednesday. Preparation was proceeding smoothly
and a lot of entertainment and sports celebrities had promised to join in the
performance, the organizer said.
Moreover, China's personal computer giant Lenovo Group Limited has offered a
donation of 500,000 US dollars, which will be forwarded to tsunami-affected
areas through China Red Cross Society.
