The Shanghai government is calling for more people to donate toward the tsunami relief efforts currently going on around town.
Shanghai Roche Pharmaceuticals Co said yesterday it would donate antibacterial and antibiotic medicines for up to 80,000 patients.
A total of 220,000 packages of medicines have been sent to related countries. The medicine is being made available to an international aid organization which coordinates the delivery in the affected countries and will ensure responsible usage of the donation.
Nearly 10 local businesses, mainly computer and IT companies, will also kick off an online charity auction to raise funds for the catastrophe-stricken areas next week.
Companies such as Tom.com, 163.com and Nokia, are donating their own products, worth a total of 300,000 yuan (US$36,114), to be auctioned on EachNet.com from Monday to January 17.
A Japanese automaker has donated vehicles valued at about 750,000 yuan for the auction.
