Shanghai Daily news

A 15-member medical aid unit from Shanghai successfully concluded its eight-day stay in Phuket yesterday. It was sent to the tsunami-ravaged Thai resort island on December 31 to provide assistance with the rescue efforts.
Yesterday morning, doctors of the unit treated two patients at Patong Hospital. Both were injured during the tsunami on December 26.
During their stay, the team did a lot of medical rescue work among Phuket's communities, schools and hospitals. They also conducted an epidemiologic survey and gave suggestions to locals on disinfecting drinking water, effective environmental treatment and how to eliminate disease-carrying insects.
Their work received extensive recognition from both the Thai government and local residents.
The shanghai team was the first medical aid sent by the Chinese government to the tsunami-affected areas in southern and southeastern Asia.
The team featured well-trained, experienced professionals. Nine were from the local disease prevention and control centers and the others worked at Zhongshan Hospital and Shanghai No. 6 People's Hospital.
