Tours to South East Asia and the United Kingdom have proved an unexpected hit in the market for the upcoming National Day holiday, despite impacts from natural disasters and terrorist attacks, today's Laodong Daily reported.
Tours to South East Asian countries began to show signs of recovery this month, with a self-organized tour to Cambodia proving very popular.
Bali and Phuket Island, hit hardest by the tsunami last year, have become hot destinations in the tourism market. "We have decided to increase seats to the two islands, and we will also guarantee one package tour a week to South East Asian nations," said Zhao Dexiang from the outbound department of Shanghai China International Travel Service Co Ltd.
The number of locals travelling to South East Asia for the National Day holiday will be at least 40 percent of that in the same period last year, according to several local travel agencies.
Tours to the UK have attracted many tourists, with air-tickets from Shanghai to London hard to get through the holiday.
Tourists are more rational in choosing where to go during golden week holidays, and they prefer to go to "unpopular" places to avoid crowds, said an industry analyst.
