Home appliance makers favor hypermarkets

Hypermarkets have become the main battlefield among household
appliance manufacturers, as they are proving more popular among local consumers
compared with home appliance specialty stores and department stores, the Jiefang
Daily reported today.
"Half of the Konka color TVs on the local market
are currently sold in hypermarkets, 45 percent in home appliance specialty
stores such as Shanghai Guomei Electrical Co Ltd and Shanghai Yongle Household
Electrical Appliances Co Ltd and only five percent in department stores," said
the spokesman with Konka's Shanghai branch.
The growing number of
hypermarkets in the city is cited as the main reason for their growing
popularity among home appliance buyers, the spokesman said. Many hypermarkets
offer shuttle-bus service for consumers' convenience, he added.
The sales
volumes of home appliances in the hypermarkets have far exceeded those of food
and daily consumer goods, so hypermarket operators are inclined to promote
household appliance products, he said.
High-end home appliance products
such as rear-projection TVs and liquid crystal TVs are also sold in hypermarkets
in order to gain popularity with the public, said an industry analyst.
