17/11/2003 18:20

Reconstruction work for the emergency rooms in the local 17 city-level hospitals has been completed ahead of schedule, with the total emergency space expanding by 12,054.4 square meters.
In March this year, in order to meet the growing demand for medical services and improve emergency room facilities, the local government listed the upgrading of emergency rooms in 17 city-level hospitals as the main task for the residents.
"Shanghai has invested more than 40 million yuan (US$4.8 million) to complete the face-lift project," said the spokesman with the Shanghai Health Bureau.
The project, planned to be completed by the end of the year, was finished ahead of schedule, the spokesman said.
Previously, only 17 hospitals were covered in the face-lift project, including Renji, Ruijin, Xinhua, Zhongshan, Huashan, Shanghai No.1 People's Hospital, Shanghai No.6 People's Hospital, Shanghai No.9 People's Hospital, Baosteel Hospital, Longhua, Yueyang, Shuguang, Children's Hospital, Tumor Hospital, Shanghai China East Hospital, Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, and Shanghai First Women And Baby Hospital. But now two more hospitals - Tongji Hospital and Shanghai Children's Medical Center ?are included in the project, the spokesman said.
The total emergency space of the planned 17 city-level hospitals has been expanded from 21,350 to 33,404.4 square meters, up 56.5 percent:
Huashan Hospital (325 square meters); Xinhua Hospital (3,200 square meters); and Ruijin Hospital (1,500 square meters).
Ruijin Hospital has separated its emergency space into different zones according to patients' different disease situations.
The layout and facilities in the 19 local hospitals are largely improved, such as air-conditioners or electric-fans installed in emergency treatment rooms and disinfection equipment available for doctors and patients.
