The President of
the University of California (UC) is in Shanghai, seeking cooperation with local
counterparts. After a visit to such local schools as Fudan, Jiao Tong and
Tongji, the President, Professor Robert C. Dynes, said that UC shares much in
common with Asia as regards future development, and should maintain a close
relationship. Before the trip, the President was in Beijing and established
a university cooperative union between 10 UC campuses and 10 top Chinese
universities in relation to academic research and education. Under the 10+10
pact, the cooperation will be extended to exchanges between research staff and
doctoral candidates as well as interaction between universities and government,
industrial and community organizations. Professor Dynes hoped the pact could
produce greater educational achievements and improve the level of cooperation
between US and Chinese universities. He also expected it to generate positive
influences on society, which he regarded as the top priority of a world-class
university. Besides the three local universities, the other seven Chinese
universities joining the union are Beijing, Nanjing, Qinghua, Sichuan, Zhejiang,
China Agricultural and Ocean University of China.
