DHL, a global logistics industry leader from Germany, specializes in air, sea and land transport and the multimodal transport services that have flourished in recent years. Since China kicked off reform and opening-up, the company’s two key decisions have laid a solid foundation for its current presence.
Benefiting from Shanghai’s favorable trade policy,DHL established the first air freight bonded warehouse with cold chain logistics facilities in the Pudong Airport Comprehensive Free TradeZone in 2015. The warehouse covers an area of 15,000 square meters and is equipped with 22 docking rooms.Whether a daily necessity like food or medicine, or domestically produced large aircraft C919, it is able to be stored here and at DHL’s dozens of warehouse across the country.
DHL’s commitment to multimodal transport services through the Asia-Europe Railway has paid off after China unveiled the Belt and Road Initiative. This new transportation solution has greater flexibility. It is cost-saving, and helps reduce carbon emissions. However, the process has been delayed due to underdeveloped infrastructure and intricate customs processes in the countries along the route. In 2013, the Chinese government began to step up developing and improving the infrastructure along the Belt and Road, while promoting regional cooperation and trade. It provides a key solution to help solve DHL’s Asia-European dilemma. The company has been gearing up investing in logistics infrastructure and service networks in the countries along the route, making multimodal transport a new driver behind its business growth.
Trade between countries is ultimately achieved through international logistics. Shanghai aims to become the world’s leading hub for sea and air transport by 2020. DHL is on the road to realize a bigger dream.
