ABB Robots in Shanghai

2018-10-17 13:57:20

As a global leader in robotics, industrial automation and power grids, ABB has made positive contributions to China’s auto industry, power grid security, and financial security.

ABB’s robot business has led to a qualitative leap in China’s auto industry. Before the reform and opening-up, China’s automobile production capacity was very low, with 10,000 vehicles being produced in 30years. In November 1978, Deng Xiaoping decided to launch the auto project in Shanghai through Sino-foreign joint ventures and introduction of technologies. That is how Shanghai Volkswagen was born. In the general assembly partof its Santana production line, six ABB spot welding robots appeared for the first time, greatly improving the production efficiency.

With the development of economy, industrial robots are widely used in areas such as communication, food and beverage, medicine and transportation. ABB decided in 2005 to set up a global R&D center for robots in Shanghai, becoming the first multinational enterprise to carry out local R&D and production of industrial robots in China.

ABB has also made great contributions to Pudong New Area, the pioneer in China’s reform and opening-up. Its joint venture in Shanghai has participated in the construction of Yangshan Deepwater Port. In 2015, ABB provided terminal products and maintenance for adistribution automation projectin Pudong, which ensured the power reliability in its core area. ABB also provides electric power for the Shanghai Stock Exchange’sdata center in Jinqiao, Pudong. All these have facilitated the efforts to build Shanghai into an international financial center.

In response to the strategy proposed in the Shanghai 2035 master plan of building a scientific innovation center, ABB has been devoting itself in recent years to integrating industry expertise, interconnection experience and digital technology to develop a digital solution called ABB AbilityTM, which isused in areas such as industry and distribution in Shanghai.
