Located in Tang Town, Our Lady of Lourdes Church, covering an area of 2.67 hectares, was completed in 1897, the 23rd year of Emperor Guagxu's Reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is typical of Gothic Church and got such a name due to the imitation of the construction of the French Mt. Lourdes Church. The opening ceremony of the Church auditorium was held on January 1, 1898, with 6000 participating Christians and non-Christians. Seen from the sky, the church looks like a big cross. With a capacity of 2000 people, the main hall houses Madonna, Mass stage and other statues. Right upon the main entrance of the church is the 47.4-meter-high bell tower, which can be ascended through the spiral stairs. It is said that one can see the ocean in the east and the downtown area in the west from the top of the bell tower, which is visible from 10 kilometers away. The church was renovated in 1991, which was finished in 1992. The reopening ceremony of the church was attended by three bishops and over 8000 Christians from Shanghai, Fujian Province and Jiangsu Province, along with more than 80 overseas Catholics and more than 100 foreign guests from France and Italy. As famous as Xujiahui Catholic Church, Our Lady of Lourdes Church is the biggest sites for Catholic activities in Pudong, and has been nominated as one of the sites for the Virgin Mary Worship Month.
