With a history of more than 300 years, the Pond of the Drunken Bai (“Zuibaichi” in Chinese Mandarin) is a classical garden in the style of Ming Dynasty. It is listed as one of the Five Classical Gardens in Shanghai, and the other four are Yu Garden, Guyi Garden, Qiuxia Garden and Qushui Garden. Also, the Pond of the Drunken Bai is the oldest one among the five.
"Bai" in the name is said to indicates Libai, a famous poet in the Tang Dynasty. According to Sushi’s Book Notes of the Drunken Bai House (Zuibaitangji), Han Qi, the prime minister of Song Dynasty, adored Li's free and leisure with hobbies of drink and poem, so Han built the Drunken Bai House in his hometown Anyang, Henan Province. However, someone believes that "Bai" indicates Bai Juyi, another well-known poet in the Tang Dynasty.
Located in Songjiang Distict, the Pond of the Drunken Bai covers an area of five hectares. With a square pond in the center and pavilion and corridor around, the garden is well persevered and impresses visitors with its beautiful scenery.
There are also a large number of previous historical materials and cultural heritage such as the stone inscription “Red Cliff” and “Nandehutu”.
