Paulaner is the most successful German restaurant chain in Shanghai and
boasts three grandiose outlets on both sides of the Huangpu, including one in
Xintiandi (although that one's mainly for tourists). All your standard German
dishes are available herein–- schnitzels, sausage platters, et. al. -- as well
as Paulaner's own brand of beer, which comes in wheat and lager. Paulaner is
known for said beer and it's even available in selected convenience stores
around town.
A good venue for larger groups, Paulaner turns into a
good old fashion beer fest on the weekends with much drunken revelry and
horrible dancing -- especially the one in Xintiandi, which hosts Filipino cover
bands.
The outlets on Fenyang Lu and Pudong offer great outdoor
seating, and the more standard German beer garden experience (patio seating at
the Xintiandi outlet is pretty negligible).
Like all German
restaurants, a meal at Paulaner isn't cheap, but if you're looking for
dependable German food, good beer, and a good tipsy time, this Brauhaus is a
safe bet.
