The sixth solar term–"grain rain" or "guyu" in Chinese–falls on April 20, marking the end of spring. As the old saying "Qingming ceases snow, grain rain ceases frost" implies, when this term arrives, cold weather finally ends, and the temperature starts to rise.

Grain Rain originates from the saying that "rain brings up the growth of hundreds of grains.” It is therefore a sound time for the growth of crops. Plenty of rainfall around the Grain Rain is suitable for planting cucumbers, eggplants, peppers, winter melons and pumpkins.

Guyu also sees the bloom of the peony, which is known as the "Queen of All Flowers" in Chinese culture. As a result, admiring the peonies is one of the most enjoyable activities for many.

Tea buds become much stronger during the Guyu period. Guyu Tea is the best product of the year. Tea tasting is another important custom in this solar term. Compared with the tea before the Qingming Festival, the tea leaves in Guyu are greener in color, softer in texture, mellower in taste, and better for the health. On the first day of Guyu, tea farmers usually go to the mountains to pick some new tea leaves and reserve them for drinking.
