City’s vegetable bank: two birds with one stone
By:Wu Qiong   |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2021-12-06 17:11

A “vegetable bank” has been opened in the city. It is described as “killing two birds with one stone”, as it has not only solved the vegetable waste problem but also helped the people in need.

Vegetables in the vegetable bank come from a grocery market on Dunhua Road in Yangpu District. Each day at 3:30pm, Zhang Li, head of the market, will confirm with the venders how many items they can offer at reasonable prices.

Later, after checking the inventory, he will go to the neighborhoods and deliver the vegetables to the doorsteps of families who are in need of help.

“There are a large number of wasted green leafy vegetables in the market, especially when the temperature is high. In order to avoid waste, every day we contact the venders who offer affordable vegetables, and then pack the surplus and good-quality vegetables, and provide them for people in difficulties in the community,” said Zhang Li.
