China's first International Teachers College of Chinese Language and Culture opened on the morning of Jan 19, 2015 at the Institute of Global Chinese Language Teacher Education of East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, marking the new stage of international Chinese language teachers' training.

Director General of the Office of Chinese Language Council (Hanban) Xu Lin said at the ceremony that the training of the Chinese language teachers should be more standardized and professionalized as the Confucius Institute started its second decade, concentrating on cross-cultural exchange and teaching in non-native language environment.

International Teachers College of Chinese Language and Culture of ECNU is the first one of the kind in the country, and the Institute of Global Chinese Language Teacher Education is the first organization set up officially in China’s universities by the Office of Chinese Language Council (Hanban) with the former Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress Xu Jialu serving as Council Director of the institute.

Since the institute was founded in 2008, it has trained 12,000 Chinese language teachers including national government-sponsored teachers, volunteers and foreign and domestic teachers.

The establishment of the International Teachers College of Chinese Language and Culture offers strong support for the professionalism of the international Chinese language teachers. The college is committed to the education of the professional international Chinese language teachers, thus promoting the construction of the international Chinese language teaching staff to meet the ever-increasing need of the diversified global markets.

The attendees of the unveiling ceremony also included Secretary of the Communist Party of China committee and Vice President of ECNU Ren Youqun and Deputy Executive Director of the Institute of Global Chinese Language Teacher Education Zhang Jianmin.
