Sculpture festival takes art to the people

Fifty-five works will be on display during the 2020Jing’an International Sculpture Project from Saturday till the end of this year.

The work of 29 artists from countries that include China, Japan, Italy, Mexico, UK, Ukraine and Indonesia will adornJing’an Sculpture Park, Plaza 66,Fengshengli,WujiangRoad andJing’an Foreign Language Primary School.

The aim is to bring art closer to the people and it will be the first time the sculpture festival has come to a school campus.

A.R.T. Institution from China has designed a work to pay tribute to the fight against the novel coronavirus epidemic and spark a self-examination of the relationship between human and nature.

The work, called "We Are The World," consists of a fleet of five boats with people in protective outfits and animals such as zebras, pandas and dogs onboard, as a metaphor for Noah’s Ark and that the world is working together to get through the pandemic.

Richard Long, a renowned contemporary artist from the UK, will bring his "Four Ways" work to Shanghai. The work, made of slates, is in the shape of a cross and its rustic quality reminds people of mountains, rocks and untouched land.

Cameroonian artistPascaleMarthineTayouaims to discuss the fate of human beings and the topic of the global village in his work.

He is bringing a sculpture called "The Talking Tree" to the festival. Made of plastic, metal and cement, the giant tree was made based on African tradition of a talking tree where everyone is free to express their thoughts.

Shanghai-born artistLiangShaojiwill present his new work "Moon Bay," made of stainless steel, to express his understanding of how human activities have affected the natural world.

He has reshaped exhaust pipes in the style of a trumpet shell as if it could flow with the waves on the ocean under the moonlight. He wants to show that an industrial product ends up as an organic life form, finally returning to the natural world.

Over the period, a variety of activities will be held such as music performances, flash mobs and photo competitions.
