Yao Zhen, a former UN peacekeeper in South Sudan, is a traffic policeman in Shanghai’s Jing’an District. Early this month, he gave a bilingual lecture on traffic safety to students at Suhewan Experimental Middle School.

Three years ago, Yao served as a UN peacekeeper and was dispatched to South Sudan to protect the civilians there. At the end of 2015, he joined the police force in Jing’an after returning to Shanghai, and became a traffic police officer. Thanks to his experience of serving in South Sudan, Yao is good at dealing with people with different cultural backgrounds. Therefore, he can better educate foreigners who live in Shanghai but have little awareness about China’s traffic rules.

While giving a bilingual lecture to students at Suhewan Experimental Middle School, Yao used a vivid case to promote traffic safety to the younger generation. After that, five students followed Yao to the Jing’an Temple area and served as voluntary traffic attendants. While feeling anxious about speaking English to foreigners, the teenagers were very active in promoting traffic safety to them.
