A seminar for the novel The Story of Shanghai Children written by 95-year-old Sun Yi was held in Shanghai Writers Association on January 15.

The trilogy of The Story of Shanghai Children depicts the bottom children’s lives around the time of the founding of New China. Covering a time span from the 1930s to the 1950s, it is the first novel in literature themed at the development of underground young pioneers.

As a writer and also a revolutionist involved in the establishment of the Communist Party’s underground young pioneers, Sun Yi, from a witnessing point of view, through the depiction of the growth process of a Shanghai child presents the hardship and enormous changes our nation has experienced.

Although having produced numerous children’s poetry and children’s dramas,The Story of Shanghai Children is Sun’s first novel. To collect materials, Sun, in his 90s, often had to drive his electric vehicle to have interviews and therefore got overworked and sick. Even when he was in hospital, he still insisted on the creation of this work. For him, it is almost a “book of life”.

Sun comments that since he has finished the book, he could leave the world without any regret.
