Ding Wenxiang is the pioneer of pediatric cardiothoracic surgery in China. In the early 1980s, Dr. Ding introduced the process to carry out pediatric cardiac surgery in China and demonstrated the self-developed surgical instruments to the president of Project HOPE (Health and Opportunity for People Everywhere) of America.

With the support of the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, the pediatric cardiovascular surgery team led by Boston Children's Hospital came to Xinhua Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine to guide and carry out the first domestic large vessel dislocation correction operation.

In 1998, the Shanghai Children's Medical Center was jointly established by the Shanghai Municipal People's Government and Project HOPE, breaking new ground for pediatric medicine in China. Project HOPE not only donated the world's most advanced medical equipment at that time, but also provided 6 million US dollars of sponsorship for the study and training of Chinese medical staff.

Ji Qingying, secretary of the Party Committee of Shanghai Children's Medical Center, said that the design of Shanghai Children's Medical Center is a "garden-style children's hospital" aiming to provide high-quality services for children.

Today's Shanghai Children's Medical Center has become a first-class children's hospital with national and international prestige. In Shanghai, the close exchanges and cooperation between China and the United States in the field of medicine and health care have brought mutual benefits to both countries for improving people's health and promoting technological development.

Medical talents are hospitals’ competitive advantage. In Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Shanghai Fudan University, the clinical medical staff training platform has developed rapidly in the past ten years. By implementing the management idea of "internationalization of talent training", the hospital selects outstanding talents to participate in overseas training programs, which covers medical teaching and research projects.

Mao Ying, president of Huashan Hospital, said the hospital signed the first round of strategic cooperation agreement with Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) in 2005, and has completed three rounds of cooperation so far.

In 2019, Huashan Hospital reached a 2-month training consensus with the University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center and selected key physicians to participate in the clinical Preceptor training program, which covers clinical and scientific research, and education.

In addition, Huashan Hospital has successively selected 97 key personnel from clinical departments to participate in the "Global Clinical Scholars Research Training Program" organized by Harvard Medical School, aiming to cultivate compound talents with both clinical skills and research insights starting from 2016.

In the past six years, Harvard's trainees have made a series of outstanding achievements, such as being approved for major scientific and technological projects, having applied for a number of national patents, and having published a number of research results.

"I hope we can create a platform where domestic and international doctors can interact effectively and dynamically to serve the public. Only if the health of the public is being guaranteed, can the doctors and experts in public hospitals realize the real value of medical dreams," Mao said.
