Making zongzi at home becomes trendy during Dragon Boat Festival
By:Zhao Chunyuan  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2022-06-03 18:19

Dragon Boat Festival this year has coincided with the normal production and living order being largely restored in Shanghai. Most residents of Shanghai are allowed out of their homes, which has brought even greater meaning to this year's Dragon Boat Festival. More and more young people would like to eat zongzi (sticky rice dumplings wrapped in leaves), hang wormwood in front of the door and follow other traditional customs to bring a good meaning of "peace and health".

Making zongzi at home has become very popular during this Dragon Boat Festival due to people’s increasing focus on health. Data show that sales of zongzi increased by 52%, sales of leaves increased by 150%, and sales of string increased by 208% compared with the first two weeks of the Dragon Boat Festival last year.

Traditional festivals are in fact a time for people to cook innovative cuisine with traditional ingredients, and this year the flavors of zongzi are even more diverse. More unexpected ingredients have been added into zongzi in addition to the traditional white rice zongzi, sweet zongzi and meat zongzi.

This year, many younger consumers who focus on light and healthy food will prefer mixed grains zongzi with Ginkgo nuts and red beans which is oil-free and less calorific. This light food consists of seven kinds of grain, including watermelon seeds, myotonin, lotus seeds and peanut kernels.
