TOKYO, Jan. 25 (Xinhua) -- A poll conducted by Japan's Asahi Shimbun newspaper revealed Monday that the approval rating for Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga's cabinet fell to 33 percent.

Meanwhile, the disapproval rating for Suga's cabinet rose to 45 percent, according to the poll conducted over the weekend.

In the survey, 73 percent of the respondents said Suga had "failed" to provide leadership in managing the COVID-19 epidemic. The Asahi Shimbun said that public dissatisfaction with the government's measures to control the epidemic had greatly dented the cabinet's support.

Eighty percent of the surveyed, in response to the government's recent state of emergency declaration for 11 prefectures, said the timing of the declaration was "too late."

At the same time, 54 percent said the measures in the declaration, such as asking people to avoid unnecessary outings and calling on restaurants to shorten their opening hours, are "insufficient." Only 34 percent said the measures were "appropriate."

If the government plans to promote vaccination for free, only 21 percent of the respondents said they would get it immediately, while 70 percent said they would "wait and see" and 8 percent said they would "not get vaccination," the poll showed.

In response to public concerns about the Tokyo Olympics, 51 percent of the respondents said they think the Olympics would be "postponed again," 35 percent said they would be "suspended," and only 11 percent said the Games would be "held as scheduled."

Japan's major media conduct public opinion polls on the cabinet's support rate at different times. According to an opinion poll published by NHK on Jan. 12, the approval rating of Suga's cabinet fell to 40 percent, while the disapproval rating rose to 41 percent, marking the first time that approval rating has fallen below disapproval rating of Suga's cabinet since it was formed in September last year.
