German industrial employment hits record high

BERLIN, Nov. 15 (Xinhua) -- The number of employees in Germany'smanufacturing sector reached a new record high in September,figures from the Federal Statistical Office showed onWednesday.

The number of employees in manufacturing industries rose by102,000 or 1.9 percent in September compared to the same periodlast year to reach a total of 5.5 million, registering a recordhigh since 2005.

The Wiesbaden-based government statisticians attributed to thepositive development to Germany's lasting economic momentum.Production, exports and industrial orders all rose in the thirdquarter.

Most of the new staff in the wider manufacturing sector wereadded by the food and animal feed producers (3.9 percent), followedby the producers of electrical equipment (3.8 percent).

Remuneration paid out by manufacturers in September was measuredat 21.9 billion euros by the Federal Statistical Office, anincrease of 3.4 percent compared to September 2016.

Despite the favorable data, the Federal Association of GermanIndustry (BDI) warned against economic complacency.

"We cannot relax on the back of the great figures of the year2017," BDI president Dieter Kempf told press in Berlin, urging thenext German government to place a greater focus on the country'sdigitalization and the improvement of internet speeds.

Speaking with view to ongoing "Jamaica" coalition negotiations,the BDI president expressed fear that a phase of uncertainty couldendanger investment by businesses. The industrial association'smembers therefore "hoped and expected" that a new federalgovernment would be formed by the end of 2017. Enditem
