From:Xinhua  |  2019-12-15 21:13

KATHMANDU, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC), the national flag carrier of the Himalayan country, announced Sunday that it would conduct flight to China's southern city -- Guangzhou from Nepal's capital Kathmandu, starting from the second week of March next year.

It will be the re-entry of Nepal's national flag carrier to a Chinese mainland destination after 11 years. It used to conduct Kathmandu-Shanghai flight until 2008 and the flight was discontinued due to its worsened financial situation. However, the NAC has been conducting regular flight from Kathmandu to Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China regularly.

"A meeting of NAC's executive committee meeting held on Dec. 12 decided to add China's Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport as a new destination," a press release issued by the NAC stated.

Nepali national flag carrier had recently obtained landing right from Chinese authorities to conduct flight to Guangzhou. "We have planned to conduct three flights a week on Kathmandu-Guangzhou route," Ganesh Bahadur Chand, deputy managing director of the NAC told Xinhua on Sunday. The NAC will compete with China Southern Airlines which is conducting regular flight between the two cities.

Chand said that the Nepal's national flag carrier would conduct promotional events before conducting the regular fights to Guangzhou. "We hope to bring more and more Chinese tourists during the Visit Nepal Year-2020," he added.

Nepal aims to attract 2 million foreign tourists including 350,000 Chinese during the campaign, according to the Nepal Tourism Board, the main tourism promotion body of Nepal. As of October in 2019, Nepal received a total of 134,281 Chinese tourists, a rise of 9.2 percent on year on year basis.

Another Nepali airline -- Himalaya Airlines, established under Nepal-China joint venture arrangement, had recently started flights to three Chinese cities. After first starting Kathmandu-Beijing flight in October, it later added two new Chinese destinations -- Guiyang, the provincial capital city of southwestern Guizhou province and Changsha, the provincial capital of central Hunan province.
