According to a recent survey conducted by two organizations, 69.04% of fans in China have spent money on celebrities. Some fans spent over 5,000 yuan every month, and some idolaters even had overdrafts due to their superstar chasing behavior.

It also shows the average age of idolaters became younger, and younger age group takes up a higher proportion in the idol chasing population. Only 26.78% of the post-90s (born after 1990s) respondents were idolaters, however 50.82% among the post-95s generation and nearly 70% of the post-00s generation believed they were idolaters. According to the results, most idolaters were students.

Overall, entertainment stars are the favorite of star chasers. 52.9% of the respondents said that their idols are singers (or bands), and 49.03% of the respondents prefer movie or television stars. However, different age groups have different idols.

According to a 16-year old teenager Diandian, almost every peer in her school had at least one idol. Some students not only pay attention to the one they favor the most but are also interested in other celebrities. “I see you for how you look, like you for what you do, and be faithful to you for who you are.” This is a saying spread widely among fans groups. Obviously, idols’ good-looking appearances are the reason why fans started to notice them. There are always super good-looking people in idol groups. Perhaps it’s not hard to explain why over 60% of the Post-00s have been fans of idol groups.

It is noteworthy that instead of spending their parents’ money, nearly 40% of student idolaters were using their own money for idol chasing by means of, trying to get a scholarship, for example, while some other students made overdrafts. “I will try to get a scholarship, and do part-time jobs to earn money to buy albums and merchandises, but now I cannot afford expensive things,” said Nana, a junior university student said. She also told us, her parents had already given her daily life allowance, she didn’t want them to pay more for her due to reasons such as idol chasing.

Results of this investigation also indicate that 69.04% idolaters have spent money for their idol, 4.67% of them have spent over 5000 yuan a month. Among idolaters, Internet celebrities and broadcasters’ fans were most willing to spend money for their idols. Nearly 40% of fans have spent more than 2,000 yuan on each bill.

60.87% of fans have been purchased their idols’ works such as albums, books and movies. But it was not the highest cost, according to the investigation, tickets of concerts and fan meetings were more expensive.

In addition, there are more and more ways for fans to consume for idols. A lot of fans spent their money on various voting. Fans earned additional voting opportunities through purchase and recharge to help their idols get to top of lists.
