VR brings immersive road safety education to Shanghai
By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2019-09-11 15:23

A Total Road Safety Training Camp program, an event designed to raise road safety awareness by Total China, was held in Yumiao Primary School in the Minhang district of Shanghai on September 10. Nearly 200 pupils received immersive road safety education with VR technology being introduced into the class.

The safety training courses were carried out through scene simulation and game interaction, by which students learned road safety knowledge not only with VR immersive devices, but also in real-world games.

Xiao Xiaojuan, the principal of the primary school, said,“the experiential courses are highly interesting. Customized teaching props allow children to get the most realistic on-site experience and learn safety skills, filling the blank of child safety education in school. We hope to benefit more students through such cooperation with social programs in the future."

Since it was started 10 years ago, the Total Road Safety Training Camp has been dedicated to children’s safety education and has worked in partnership with local junior schools to build and improve the safety education system for children.

However, what’s worrying is that road traffic injuries are the second leading cause of death among minors aged from 1 to 14 in China, according to the Road Safety: Basic Facts and the Global status report on road safety 2018 reports released by the World Health Organization recently.

“The road traffic conditions are complicated nowadays. Many accidents are caused by the lack of awareness and common sense towards traffic safety among parents and children. It is highly necessary to give children guidance on traffic safety,” said Qiu Jian, a police officer with the Shanghai Public Security Bureau Minhang Branch.
