China’s anime movie Ne Zha vies for Oscar
By:Wu Qiong  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2019-10-14 08:40

The animated movie “Ne Zha”, a hit in this summer’s box office in China, is heading towards the Oscars.

Grossing a total of 4.16 billion yuan at the domestic box office, the movie reaped the second highest box office total on the Chinese mainland. At present, the smash hit is vying for the Best International Feature Film of the 92nd Academy Awards.

According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, “Ne Zha” is among 93 films competing in the Best International Feature Film category. Previously known as the Best Foreign Language Film category, the Academy renamed it in April for better international coverage.

The news announced on October 8 has resulted in much support on the Internet, where netizens expressed their best wishes for the film, though as a Chinese animation, it might not be mature enough for international competition. “Whether it can win the award or not, it is affirming China’s cultural confidence to the world,” one comment reads. “Come on, Ne Zha. You have got my back,” says another netizen.

“Ne Zha” is the first ever Chinese animated film that has been submitted for the Best International Feature Film category. It is the crystallization of work by over 60 production teams and 1,600 crew members over three years. 20% of the movie’s shots were produced by an animation studio in Shanghai’s Jiading district.

The success of “Ne Zha”, which marks a milestone in the transformation of China’s film industry, is closely related to the government’s support for the ACG (animation, comics and games) industry, said Zhang Houjian, vice president of the studio. Now his team is preparing for a new animated film “Jiang Ziya” (based on a Chinese historical figure) which will be released during the 2020 Chinese New Year.
