Expats love safe Shanghai

With 24 million residents, the metropolis of Shanghai is running smoothly every day. Security is the bottom line of a city and that’s one of the top reasons why numerous people like to work here.

According to a 3rd-party survey, the satisfaction degree of Shanghai’s security has been among the top of Chinese cities for six consecutive years. In many polls conducted among people living abroad, Shanghai has always been listed as one of the safest cities in the world. What are the reasons behind that?

“Safety is my first impression of the city,” said Habil from Pakistan who has lived in the city for 10 years. “Last night, I remembered in the middle of the night that I had forgotten to lock my e-bike. But I just turned over and continued to sleep. In Shanghai, cameras are set in all streets and lanes, so you don't have to worry about your bike being stolen.”

Hailing from Morocco, Salma is an international student in Shanghai. When she first came to Shanghai, Salma found the metro station had security checks throughout the day, which made her very surprised, because when she was living in Paris, it was not the same feeling. That impressed her that Shanghai is a particularly safe city.

Now preparing her final thesis, Salma conducts surveys in a hotel in Putuo District and always goes back to her dormitory late at night. But she is not afraid at all. And as she said, many foreign tourists and students she has met share the same feeling as her.

“For Shanghai’s security, I give it 100 points!” said 24-year-old Tobi from the Ivory Coast. “I’ve been to many countries, like Turkey, the UK and Thailand. You know China has long holidays like the National Day and Labor Day. I usually live in Pudong and often go to Lujiazui. Every national holiday, there are many people in the street. In Shanghai, no problem; but in other countries, there are problems! Once I was travelling in Thailand, and I saw nearby a scenic spot a foreign tour group ran past me. People said there was an accident happening. That kind of experience, I have never encountered in Shanghai.”

“Everyone agrees that Shanghai is very very safe, both at work and personally.” Having lived in the city for 9 years, Swedish girl Emma runs a bar in Jing’an District and comes off duty after midnight. But walking on the street in the dawn, she has never been afraid ever. She also said she feels very safe as a business operator. Sometimes guests get drunk and there are some quarrels in the pub, but the police can always get to the scene within five minutes. “I do love Shanghai. I love the city.”
