The '2017 vs. 2019' meme takes over social media

A lot can change in one year, let alone two. As there are less than 40 days away from the New Year of 2020, a photo challenge got its start on China’s Twitter-like Weibo. Dubbed the "2017 vs 2019 Challenge", the meme somewhat intuitively asks participants to share photos two years apart to show how much they have changed, both physically and otherwise.

The trend has also taken over WeChat. In WeChat Moments, people shared their selfies in 2017 and 2019. The most intuitive change in two years is in their looks and appearance. Some became prettier. Some became slimmer.

And some people found their true love over the past two years. Congratulations!

Some got married in 2019 after graduating from college, showing that their campus romance stood the test of time.

Celebrities have also taken part, even if unwittingly. Fans posted their idols’ photos on Weibo. Within two years, these celebrities have grown up and become more mature.

However, for some other people, they have had to face reality. No matter if it is because of pressure or other reasons, they have had to admit they are no longer as young as before, with a plumper body shape, more fat around the waist or the chin, a balder head or a pair of darker eyes.

For some, their bank savings shrank. “In 2017, I was poor; in 2019, I am much poorer,” joked a netizen.

And so, the great meme drought of the final weeks of 2019 is finally over.
