By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2019-12-06 13:49

A traditional Chinese etiquette experience and education exhibition initiated by university students opened at East China Normal University on December 4th.

The exhibition combines contextualized and immersive experiences with videos.

On the opening day, the immersive experience had a strong antiquity appeal in the form of university students dressed in antique Chinese clothing visiting the show. This attracted many foreign students who were amazed by, and expressed a great admiration for, the traditional Chinese culture.

Undertaking all tasks by themselves including the acting, directing, screenwriting, post-packaging and promotion, a student team, who are from the Department of Educational Information Technology, created a 10-episode series of educational short films. The films introduced many aspects of traditional Chinese etiquette, like tea ceremonies, wine ceremonies, chopsticks use, birthday felicitations to the elderly, and festivals.

Chen Zhenyuan, one of the founders of the project, said that abandoning the traditional educational mode, his films have incorporated elements the current university students like most such as antiquity, time travel, and cold humor so as to integrate fun into learning. In Chen’s words, many university students have no exact understanding of traditional Chinese etiquette knowledge, but are quite eager to learn about it and that is the reason why his team initiated the program.

After watching the films, Professor Chen Xiaoda, deputy dean of the Shanghai Vancouver Film Academy, who was the Chinese dean of the Confucius Institute at the Prince of Songkhla University in Thailand, appraised that through film and television, the most mainstream media form, education can more easily access students’ minds.
