By:Wu Qiong  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2020-01-08 16:13

Tesla CEO Elon Musk appeared at the Tesla Shanghai Gigafactory on January 7, just a few days after the 1st batch of China-produced Tesla vehicleswere delivered.

The second batch of Tesla Model 3 was delivered to 10 users on the same day. At the delivery ceremony, Musk said that his company will continue its huge amount of investment in China, for the production of Model 3, Model Y and future models.

As Musk confided, one year ago, “there were many people on Wall Street saying that ‘there is no chance of the factory being built’, and a lot of US media said, ‘there is no way the factory is gonna get built in one year’. But here we are, one year later.”

On January 7, 2019, the Shanghai Gigafactory project broke ground in Lin-gang, Pudong. That moment was witnessed by Elon Musk, who came here also to announce the production of Model 3 and Model Y in China. On December 30, 15 Model 3 vehicles were delivered to Tesla personnel, officially signifying the completion of the Gigafactory Phase I project.

On Tuesday, Phase II was officially launched, for the start of Model Y vehicle production.

The Shanghai Gigafactory is located in Lin-gang, an area which was included in the expansion of the Shanghai Free Trade Zone last year. It is now home to Tesla’s first car plant outside the US. In the future, the Lin-gang Special Area aims to become a world-class new energy vehicle industry cluster, home to Tesla and other auto manufacturers.
