McDonald's to phase out plastic straws
By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2020-07-01 17:30

McDonald's plans to reduce the use of plastics in food packaging and gradually avoid plastic straws, announced the company on June 30.

From June 30 on, nearly a thousand McDonald’s restaurants in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen adopted new cup lids for cold drinks. Such a measure will cover all Chinese mainland restaurants by the end of 2020, which will reduce 400 tons of plastic use per year.

Zhang Jiayin, McDonald's China CEO, said that over the last decade the company has been conducting “green package” action, and from 2020 all of its paper packages are 100% from raw paper certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

Food chains like KFC and Starbucks have also taken measures to reduce the use of plastic straws.
