Citrus picking in Binjiang Forest Park
By:Zheng Qian  |  From:english.eastday.com  |  2020-11-02 14:25

Shanghai Binjiang Forest Park, the only city park where people can experience the fun of reaping oranges in Shanghai, will make citrus picking available through December.

More than 1000 citrus trees in the park are now ready for harvest. In the past years, autumn outing groups from Shanghai’s schools picked half of the fruit with the remainder left for the 6000 to 8000 individual visitors. The suspension of the group picking due to the coronavirus pandemic now makes the fruit available for 15,000 to 20,000 individuals.

“Before, all the citrus was harvested in several weeks but now we have extended the picking period to 60 days for the first time in our history,” said a person in charge of the garden.

According to data from the Municipal Forestry Department, the total citrus planted area in Shanghai is over 35 million square meters, mainly in Chongming island. The output last year was 120,000 tons and this year’s output is expected to be slightly higher.
