How many bridges are there from Puxi to Pudong?

On December 1, the Nanpu Bridge connecting Puxi and Pudong in Shanghai celebrated its 30th birthday. Over the past decades, Pudong’s traffic system has undergone tremendous changes. Do you know how many bridges there are over the Huangpu River and its tributaries? The answer is 13 and they are: Songpu Bridge, Nanpu Bridge, Yangpu Bridge, Fengpu Bridge, Xupu Bridge, Lupu Bridge, No. 2 Songpu Bridge, No. 3 Songpu Bridge, Minpu Bridge, No. 2 Minpu Bridge, G1503 Huangpu River Bridge, Chenta Bridge, and Kunyang Road Bridge.

1. Songpu Bridge (1976) ↑

It is the first bridge over the Huangpu River’s Songjiang stretch. Before that, the river had no bridges. More than 300 floats passed the bridge in three hours on June 29, 1976.

2. Nanpu Bridge (1991)

The bridge was officially opened to traffic on December 1, 1991. It is China’s first cable stayed bridge with a span of over 400 meters in China. It plays a crucial role in promoting the development and opening up of the Pudong New Area.

3. Yangpu Bridge (1993)

With a total length of about 7.7 kilometers and a daily capacity of 50,000 vehicles, it is an important river-crossing passage connecting Yangpu District and Pudong New Area. It is one of the longest cable-stayed suspension bridges in the world.

4. Fengpu Bridge (1993)

Stretching around 2.2 kilometers, it was opened to traffic in October, 1993, as a super large bridge on the north-south express way in Shanghai. The completion of the bridge has solved the problem of crossing the Huangpu River that bothered the residents in Fengxian and Punan for a long time.

5. Xupu Bridge (1997)

It is the most convenient connection channel between Hongqiao and Pudong international airports. Connecting Zhumei Road and South Yanggao Road, it has a total length of 6,017 meters.

6. Lupu Bridge (2003)

Like the Sydney Harbour Bridge in Australia, Lupu Bridge is not only used for transport, but is also an attraction. It starts from Luban Road, Puxi in the north, crosses the Huangpu River and ends at Jiyang Road, Pudong in the south.

7. No. 2 Songpu Bridge (2006)

Also known as Jiajin Expressway Bridge, it is located in Yexie Town, Songjiang District, 1.1 kilometers upstream of Songpu Bridge.

8. No. 3 Songpu Bridge (2010)

Located in Songjiang District, the two ends of the bridge belong to Chedun Town and Yexie Town respectively. It is an integral part of Songwei Highway. It is an important transportation hub in Songjiang District and Jinshan District.

9. Minpu Bridge (2010)

It is a cable-stayed bridge in Minhang, Shanghai, which carries the S32 Expressway. Open to traffic on April 20, 2010, it is a major transportation project for the World Expo Shanghai 2010.

10. No. 2 Minpu Bridge(2010)

An important channel connecting Minhang and Fengxian, it is a super large double-decked cable-stayed bridge for both highway and light rail traffic. There are three rail stations along it: Dongchuan Road Station, Jiangchuan Road Station, and Xidu Station.

11. G1503 Huangpu River Bridge (2012)

Opened to traffic in February 2012, the renovation project of the Henglianjing Bridge broke two world records: the longest and heaviest bridge overall jacking project.

12. Chenta Bridge (2015)

Located in Songjiang District, it is the first fully concrete cable-stayed bridge in Shanghai. It connects the A30 Expressway in the north to reach downtown Shanghai, while to the south it reaches Jiangsu, Zhejiang and other places.

13. Kunyang Road Bridge (2020)

The 1,940-meter Kunyang Road Bridge, also known as the Minpu No. 3 Bridge, is the 13th across the Huangpu River.
