As the first self-designed and self-built Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the Chinese mainland, the Qinshan NPP has operated safely for 30 years as of December 15. It has recently been approved to extend its service for another two decades.
30 years ago, at 0:15 am on Dec. 15, 1991, the initial phase of the plant located in Zhejiang province was first connected to the electricity grid, making China the seventh country to independently design an NPP. Since then, the plant has been running with an unblemished safety record.
Currently, the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant has nine units, with a total installed capacity of 6.6 million kilowatts. It generates 52 billion kilowatt hours of electricity each year.
